Editor's Letter

“Wherever we are, what we hear is mostly noise. When we ignore it, it disturbs us. When we listen to it, we find it fascinating.” —john cage

A quote from America composer John Cage (1912-1992), well suited to us here at Color HQ, as the daily games of S.K.A.T.E. in our studio are ever so often interrupted by neighbours who just don’t understand the vibe about skating tiles… After working for hours on end in front of a computer monitor, the street can be all too much a commitment – one we save for weekends or exceptionally procrastination-prone days. Days not so different than today, so without further ado, let me introduce to you our first official “music issue.”

A lot of thought and research went into this issue. When it comes down to work, nothing helps motivate or gets you going – other than some money (that would be nice!), but nothing gets you going more than some good, rockin’ music. Some of us here took off to Indio, CA, this past April to take part and enjoy the Coachella music festival where all the best groups of our time and times past, from Morrissey to N.A.S.A, took to the stage in the 100 degree desert along with about 100 other great artists for three tireless days. Half of the group North America, South America is brother to Girl Skateboards’ film director Spike Jonze (full brother to N.A.S.A.’s Sam Spiegel). We have them featured in this issue along with a slew of other great artists and skaters whom you can make your own connections with.

The ongoing

theme in this issue is, as our featured skater Omar Salazar says, “Psychedness.” Because music is what gets all of the people in this issue up in the morning and psyched for what they truly have a passion for. And because we are beyond psyched to feature our favourite skaters each and every issue! We check in with five of skateboarding’s biggest legends who have focused their energy on music as of late, and we jam with the fictional Canadian band we call “Sounds Of Skate” , composed of skaters from Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Toronto. We also talk shop with the Rat Pack fan and Barcelona backpacker, Montreal’s Charles Rivard. And my personal favourite – the neighbours who never complain, the epicenter of grunge in the 90s; Seattle is dissected by resident/Band Of Horses drummer Creighton Barrett.

Allow the people and things you find in this issue to inspire you to take an extra minute in your day to listen to something you’ve never heard before. Or take a closer look at the things around you that ‘you don’t care for.’ You’ll find out then whether you like it or not, but I assure you you’ll care about it one way or another and be better off for understanding it a bit more. What’s the worst that can happen? For us in the office ‘the worst’ was revealed in the over-shook iPhone that wore the office tired of the Skate-Dice app. Other than that it was strictly research at the Color offices this issue – or ‘product testing’ as told to our building manager.
