GEOFF ROWLEY

Tattered Ten

Celebrating another successful premiere, Geoff Rowley took a moment outside of the pub to talk to us about mustaches, Americans, and tales from the road.

Q: When are you going to start doing heroin?

A: When I turn 70 I plan on it. If I make it to 70, which I highly doubt, there’s not going to be anything else to do but fucking shoot heroin and die. Because I won’t be able to skate, I won’t be able to surf and I won’t be able to do anything that I love. Maybe paint and make art and shoot photos, but I won’t be able to get my blood flowing, so I’ll start around then…

Well it’s about 12:30 a.m. after a nice Sunday evening and we’re sitting at the [local bar] El Furniture Warehouse, about to do a couple of Petron shots to get Wade nice and tattered to answer some good questions. I donÂ’t even drink tequila but I’m going to do it anyways because it would be disrespectful at $20 a shot.†Wade has consumed a 6er and almost a full bottle of scotch he acquired through a friendly donation. He doesn’t seem to mind footing the bill for us to see him drink and answer a bunch of random questions…

FRED GALL

TATTERED TEN WITH FRED GALL

wordsby chris nieratko

Fred Gall is a skateboarder’s skateboarder. That’s really all there is to it. The dude has killed it forever, been pro more than 10 years and still lays it down. I could be cute or fancy with words to describe Freddy but all I need to say is that his raw, mean, muscle-y way of skating will always be one of my favourites. And it should be yours too…

When we first heard that the C1rca team was coming to town the wheels were immediately put in motion for articles and interviews. I had heard that Peter Ramondetta would be on tour with the rest of the team, and seemed like he would the perfect candidate for a Tattered Ten. Upon meeting Peter for the first time I was a little set back. Although his video persona is that of a gnarly, partying skate machine, the words reserved, mild mannered and polite seemed to better describe his personality. After a brief conversation we decided to do the interview the following night at Sheldon Meleshinski’s house where a tour kickoff party was to take place. As I stepped in the door I found him playing a coin drinking game with Alien. I watched closely realizing the game did not seem to end with a winner or loser, just two very drunk individuals. This interview is the product of that fated game and many whiskey shots at the bar that followed…

RYAN SMITH

He will be the first to tell you that having a mellow just isn’t in the cards for him. Well, it’s always been black or white with Ryan, so it’s no surprise that he’s kicked the bottle completely and is focusing 100% of his energy on skateboarding. While many skateboarders party harder than anyone else you know, just a select few have managed to aquire such an image surrounding substance abuse that Ryan Smith has. I caught up with him after ten months of clean and sober living, and let me tell you, not much else has changed. He’s still a fucking maniac, I mean, look at him. It’s the Red Rider BB gun that kid wanted so bad in A Christmas Story.

10. What’s your take on skateboarding and kids nowadays?

The kids this day and age…I get a million of them on Myspace, all like, “I want to get sponsored.” NO! You gotta love it. It will come to you. You shouldn’t have the mind-frame of “I want this, I want that, I want the world, I want to travel.” Everyone wants that but that is not what skateboarding is about.

TATTERED TEN

an interview attemptby sandro grison

Hey kids! Last time we met we hung out with Marcus McBride and embarked on the first ever Tattered Ten interview. A feature in each issue, Tattered Ten is a series of ten questions prepared by Color, then afterward presented to a visiting skateboarder from outside our Native Land. In most cases, the subject for this feature would be a random skateboarder chosen by a chance meeting or sighting in the Vancouver area. For example, I

saw Chico Brenes at a club last week. With his blessings he may have been the victim of this issue’s Tattered Ten, but unfortunately Slam City Jam brought an assortment of potential interviewees. The only problem we ran into was finding somebody who wasn’t already too tattered to get Tattered with us! When this proved to be impossible we at Color pooled our resources and made some calls in an attempt to link up with the best of the worst. The most tattered of the tattered, partied of the partiers, wrecked of the wrecks: none other than Trainwreck.

MARCUS MCBRIDE

MARCUS McBRIDE

The Tattered Ten feature this issue is with Marcus McBride. A key figure in skateboarding, Marcus has dominated in a lot of areas, but when he’s caught lurking in Vancouver it’s our duty to baptise him in the finer things BC has to offer. The Tattered Ten feature is not unlike a grad kidnapping scenerio if you’re familiar with that. We choose random victim every issue and wisk them away to the luxurious Color Headquarters for a night of indulgement. One can only handle a certain amount of Kokannee and Chocolate Phillies before they stop making sense… When we get to that point- we have more. When the fruit is ripe and ready we pick at our chosen guest, asking ten questions prepared prior to the meeting, then await the conclusion. The result is what you see before you. Thanks to Marcus for participating in our little experiment, and our hypothesis was correct; Tattered! It can only get gnarlier from here…
