“I smoke weed, I drink brew, it’s all I rap about ‘cause shit, it’s all that I do!” – Devin on “One Day at a Time”. Yup, that’s it right there. That is all you need to know about Devin the Dude. Although that line is from the ’98 classic The Dude, two albums later not much has changed and that’s fine by me. In my opinion, Devin is the absolute king of music right now. He’s like Marvin Gaye meets Too Short over some of the most smoothed out G-Funk grooves I’ve ever heard in my life (in my life!). His newest album, To tha X-treme, even goes beyond the G-funk era with some mellow slow jam, R&B type shit that is simply off the hook. When I spoke with Devin recently from his Houston home, I finally realized that “the Dude” is just that, a dude. A laid-back, smoked out, humble character who raps about everyday bullshit. No one does it like him and that’s why I love him. That’s why you should love him too.
