From age twelve until I was about sixteen, I used to spend July and August in Prince Rupert working with my dad, a commercial fisherman. Moving up to northern British Columbia for a couple months out of every year isn’t exactly what you would call a rural upbringing, but if I gleaned anything from the kids that I met during those summer months, it was that a lot of them couldn’t wait to get away to the big city.
