        <title>The Ballad Of Keenan Milton</title>
        <link>http://www.colormagazine.ca/blog/sandro/post/4699/the-ballad-of-keenan-milton</link>

        <description>
<p>Visual and recording artist <a href="http://www.howlinwuelf.com/html/banhart.html">Devendra Banhart</a> released his <a href="http://www.nonesuch.com/">Nonesuch Records</a> debut, <em>Mala</em>, this week. Much to our delight, the Venezuelan—now New York resident—pays homage to his L.A. skateboarding roots with a beautiful instrumental titled: "<strong>The Ballad Of Keenan Milton</strong>".</p>
<p><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/8/88/8840e54158237d1e8e54445e9c09a77b-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="467" height="700" /></p>
<p> </p>
<p><em>Mala </em>was partly inspired by early hip-hop that the late pro skateboarder Keenan Milton adorned in his video parts with <a href="http://www.crailtap.com">Girl Skateboards</a> and uses some of the recording devices that were used in the early days. In the label's press release Banhart acknowledges, "knowing my songs are not hip-hop whatsoever, [they] thought it would be interesting to see how these songs would work...".</p>
<p>The full album can be pre-ordered now on CD and vinyl LP at <a href="http://www.nonesuch.com/artists/devendra-banhart">nonesuch.com</a> and includes a limited edition, autogrpahed print; an instant download of the album track "Für Hildegard von Bingen" and a download of the complete album!</p>

<p>The last thing you might think to see from Sweden's D.I.Y. skate-force (what's lazy about building your own skate spots?), but we are damn proud to have the support from <a href="http://www.facebook.com/polarskateco">Pontus Alv</a> and <a href="http://ytdistribution.bigcartel.com/products">YT Distribution</a> for <a href="http://www.facebook.com/groups/259554200741131/?ref=ts&amp;fref=ts">Lazy Tuesday </a>for the month of March.</p>

Finally after years of sorting through his collection (ass seen in <a href="http://www.colormagazine.ca/magazine/issue/9.3">Color 9.3</a>) <em>Color</em> compadre <a href="http://allisterlee.ca/">Allister Lee</a> has launched the official resource for black markers world-wide. <a href="http://www.blackisbeautiful.ca">Black Is Beautiful</a> will feature a different marking device every other day to keep even the nerdiest of graphic designers, craftspeople and graffiti enthusiasts interested.

<a href="http://www.BlackIsBeautiful.ca"><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/c/c7/c7480ec9be31394e5f48b95eaa6cdbe8-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="595" height="341" /></a>

<p>"This 8.5“x11” perfect bound book is a testament to skateboarding and the celebration of the re-kindled pride and passion that each and every name in the magazine possesses. Maybe you can’t quite understand what we’re doing in that parking lot or alleyway and you probably can’t fathom why a grown man or woman would need anything past a mode of transportation. It’s probably because we come from somewhere else, this Never-never Land type place where children refuse to grow up and thrive on a whole other realm of ideas. This issue was about taking risks and avoiding the repercussions of this self destructiveness we take part in each day." -Sandro</p>

<p>It’s interesting that the design of this issue was a tattered old bankbook from the 1930’s because it certainly was a struggle that nearly broke the bank to get out the first issue of Color and we were all left with scars from the process The premier issue of Color set the pace for those that followed.</p>

<p>If you were lucky enough to see <a href="Http://www.crailtap.com">Girl/Chocolate Skateboards</a>' <em>#PrettySweet</em> video, like me, you may have been disappointed not to see any <a href="http://www.colormagazine.ca/magazine/article/743/rick-howard">Rick Howard</a> footage. <p>Last night, in celebration of our Winter Issue, <a href="http://www.facebook.com/AdriftSkateshop?ref=ts&amp;fref=ts">Adrift</a> hosted the official premiere for<a href="http://www.converse.com/content/landing/skateboarding"> Cons</a>' INVERSE video with an exhibition of Gordon Nicholas' photography from the <a href="http://www.colormagazine.ca/magazine/article/911/cons-inverse-toronto">project featured in the issue</a>. They say good things come in threes and that rule has certainly rung true in the case of this shop's recent change in ownership. Huge thanks to everyone in Toronto who came out to support us, Wes at Converse Canada, and Jesse, Max and Jacob for the great thing they're doing for their local skate community. It's nice to see it being done in true style, too.</p>

<title>My Trip to AMSTERDAM and a Day in the life of Sewa Kroetkov</title>
        <link>http://www.colormagazine.ca/blog/sandro/post/4504/amsterdamn</link>

        <description>
<p>I recently returned from my honeymoon in Europe and got to see a few friends along the way. First stop was Amsterdam, and I was blown away by the amount spots, skateparks and general good stuff all around that city. <a href="http://youtu.be/m6HWZbuiRDw">This</a> is a video headed up by our friend (and Canadian) Gabriel Authier of Dutch superstar <a href="http://www.sewa.redbull.nl">Sewa Kroetkov</a>.</p>
<p></p>
<p> </p>
<p><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/2/27/2729240e806d8fd9f27d761266a4d8af-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="595" height="446" /></p>
<p><em>Gabe at work. Red Bull, Amsterdam</em></p>
<p>continue to be whisked away on a honeymoon with my bride and I...           that's weird.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/3/35/352317249135af5c5c42988ea04373e2-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="525" height="700" /></p>
<p>They love their bicycles in the Netherlands. Goodluck remembering where you parked though! We had a wild night cruising around the canals from bar to bar,  Juli riding side saddle. A memory that won't be soon forgotten.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/3/35/356823cbee3a9599c8bfab85fd542f86-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="595" height="446" /></p>
<p><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/4/46/46697bf8d6adff833ef21519d11c479b-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="595" height="446" /></p>
<p><em>Marie and Juli doing as the Dutch do.</em></p>
<p>There's a lot of students in Amsterdam which makes it a pretty happening city at night.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/f/f6/f6eff9c2ba8479b6c76ba32825ab652c-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="595" height="335" />\</p>
<p>Being from BC, I was a lot more interested in trying these other things they had readily available at every corner, than sitting in a cafe full of smoke.</p>
<p> </p>
<p><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/8/80/807acaa7d726f9d8e3496fe4de8c47e4-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="595" height="335" /></p>
<p><em>Our street.</em></p>
<p><strong>The most bizarre thing was when we figured out that Juli and I were renting the very same apartment Gabe lived in when he first moved to the city. What are the chances!?</strong></p>
<p> </p>
<p><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/b/b5/b5cb620ba68f923081784b66f31b8f6a-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="525" height="700" /></p>
<p>We cruised the Red Light district during the day, and that was gnarly enough. Kinda cool when you think of the history and how preserved that tradition is still today. Maybe our understanding of "XXX" comes from here, as it's also the symbol for the city of Amsterdam. I guess a quick wiki search could tell me.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/4/4a/4aef93a80dd333a3f1bf58cf913615e4-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="595" height="335" /></p>
<p><em>And look - Even the Red Light district has evolved for every sexual orientation.</em></p>
<p><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/c/ce/ce922a60b19501d53d2876959a5f1878-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="595" height="335" /></p>
<p><em>Rad store sign:</em></p>
<p><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/4/4d/4dacef60fed05e72423cf7be76cc9d02-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="525" height="700" /></p>
<p> </p>
<p><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/b/bb/bb71a518cb6776f0a30370c71e8c2317-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="525" height="700" /></p>

<p>There's little modular parks like this all around the city. Gabe and I had a good session in a bowl the night of our raging bike escapade. He was wearing some pretty sharp looking boots, too!</p>
<p><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/c/c0/c011109e1fb0ee8e9f6f3a01f1bb0bb1-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="525" height="700" /></p>
<p><em>skating on the honeymoon. In search of the Skatepark of Amsterdam just a short ferry from the city.</em></p>
<p>Proof that I have the best wife EVER!</p>
<p><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/6/6d/6d05d33cb6bc61230f6af1941cc25e85-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="525" height="700" /></p>

<p>We finally found <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfHUFHMl_08&amp;feature=related">the skatepark</a> on the second floor of a seemingly abandoned warehouse with originator <a href="http://www.trueskateboardmagazine.com/">Rob Rouleaux </a>to greet us. I was too hung over from the night mentioned to take advantage of the open beer taps at the park, but after a session there I went to find the Red Bull office located just a couple hundred meters away, with this really sick DICK/VAGINA bowl sitting out front. Apparently an art project. The kids didn't seem to notice and their mom didn't mind.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.colormagazine.ca/local/cache/b/bc/bcf3d8d2b130dce90942b2cdd13a7d8b-20ca3800e86363d283126d9044811b70.jpeg" alt="" width="525" height="700" /></p>

<p><em>We have these Blue Herrons in Vancouver, but none as fearless as this beast was.</em></p>
<p>On our last day in Amsterdam we took a morning stroll to the coffee shop we frequented and got to see some of the <a href="http://unseenamsterdam.com/galleries">UNSEEN</a> photo expo that as opening that day.</p>
