TOFINO PLAYS HOST TO HOSIERS

Life / Music

Yet an other reason to visit Tofino, BC. Not only is there good surfing this time of year, and miles of beach to enjoy, but the Maquinna has undergone a makeover with a list of good parties coming up. If you were looking for a long weekend destination this week then you don't want to miss Kamila Martel and the Ne’er Do Wells.

Too short notice? Skull Skates recording artists, Sorcerers play April 17th! What better time to go skate/skim/surf?!

In correlation with the Fake Jazz Festival that kicks off tomorrow (March 24-28th) in Vancouver, the Western Front plays host to a number of panel discussions and performances exploring the changing role of noise in culture. If you're not quite ready to experience the noise itself, you may want to log on to the online exhibition Network Noise not Noise.

SXSW - DAY 4

Music

words by Jason Sulyma

Juceboxxx live and in action

SXSW usual is yer break from the Vancouver grey weather and time for a lil sunshine in March but not so much this year. Day 4 was COLD! Like close to zero and see your breath cold! So we dragged our very low energy bodies thru some more room service and headed for a whole day at the Mad Decent x Iheartcomix Carniville! The weather caused the Carniville to open 2 hours late - which was a blessing for us in disguise as we got to see every act instead of missing some of the earlier - and more experimental acts - on the bill.

PoPo

First was Mad Decent's newest artist New York's BOSCO DELREY - a female and male duo that has lead singer doing yer Rockabilly riffs and lyrics with his female partner playing the most insane non Rockabilly drum programming that took the songs to a new territory for the traditional Rockabilly sound. Look out for their upcoming MAD DECENT release! Next was ex-Philly/now L.A. duo POPO. POPO are grunge and sabbath riffs with simple tom snare play work and amazing melodic lyrics that are just amazingly impressive. I can not stress getting into POPO nownownow!

JD Samson of MEN.
After a lengthy set up it was time for JD Samson from LE TIGRE'S new dance project MEN. MEN was the first act of the afternoon to have drum machine backing and this got the crowd into total dance party mode(also helping them getting the dancefloor started was the AMAZING deejay set right before them by TOY SELECTA from Montreal - playing the best a.d.d. nu-world-club I have heard in a longggggg time!)! MEN are full 4 on the floor disco project with JD Samson coming off as a great front person and has a knack for writing a catchy singalong hook.

Juiceboxxx

Ninjasonik

After the happy gay disco vibe of MEN, it was time for JUICEBOXXX and NINJASONIK's nu-club-rap sounds! JUICEBOXXX is just  something else. The whitest kid alive probably with the best homeless stylez you have seen who can write the best hip-house anthems since the early 90's. He just got into the crowd literally with a chair to hold him above the crowd and got the crowd really amped for NINJASONIK. NINJASONIK's, from NYC, live show is what makes them. Super agressive and also super happy is the only way to describe it and they have seemed to take over where SPANKROCK didn't! NINJASONIK are more of a live act than something you pop on your Itunes and listen too first thing in the morning. This is straight in the club music and needs to be seen when you want to do something dumb! Also NINJASONIK might be the first rap act to consistently start the most blingy-nu-rap-gangsters-in-attendance mosh pits ever.

The Very Best

Pase Rock of Spankrock

After the NINJASONIK madness wore off, THE VERY BEST took the stage. THE VERY BEST are my fave group right now. The world drum programming by the RADIOCLIT deejays and the lyrics and singing of ESAU MWAMWAYA from Africa have combined to make the group that is gonna spread the nu-world-club gospel around the world. THE VERY BEST have done songs with the likes of Vampire Weekend, Santigold and M.I.A., and their version of "Paper Planes" easily is happier and more fun affair than the original. Their set got every kid in attendance to stop trying to look cool for party photographers and got the smiles out and dancing happening from front of the stage to the back of the crowd sitting underneath the Gravatron Ride and Corn Dog/Funnel Cake Carni Hut. They went thru their catalogue of original songs and songs from their mixtape  and debut'd a new  song which they sample YEASAYER'S "Ambling Alp" that got the hater indie kids really into it!

As the sun set on this extremely cold day making this outdoor party really really really freezing DIPLO's MAJOR LAZER project hit the stage! DIPLO deejayed in his lil suit jacket while SKERRIT BOY - the king of Daggering - hyped the crowd up! We finally went numb halfway during their set and ran to the Whole Foods to warm up on Indian Food and Pasta Bar sessions till we could move our lil toes again!

Tanlines

We then headed over to the POP MONTREAL Showcase to see Brooklyn's TANLINES - who is a two piece guitar and sampler/laptop set up - and had the whole upper floor of Paradise Club going nuts to the their computer-tropical-disco-punk sound. TANLINES have been releasing nice cute computer tropical remixes for the last minute for the likes of The Tough Alliance and Solid Gold and I'm happy to see that they are just as good live as their productions are. This will be an act to watch later this year.

dj Tim Dolla

Dave Nada of Nadastorm

dj Tameil

We then walked over a block to the BMORE LOVE THING party which was a full nite of Baltimore Club Music with the heavyweights of the Baltimore scene, DJ TAMEIL, DJ TIM DOLLA, DAVE NADA and COUSIN COLE. DJ TIM DOLLA started the Bmore madness and got the club of 200 kids going hard with more pouring in as the nite went on. COUSIN COLE followed Tim Dolla with a super professional party set with a very happy DAVE NADA Mc'ing the whole set! DJ TAMEIL came on and played an amazing set that turned from Baltimore Club to House Music and some big room electro tunes.

Vice Magazine party

After the following dj who turned the Baltimore Club party into an IBIZA Ravefest we ran down the street to the Vice Magazine Party that had a 2 block lineup either side and we kinda lied our ways into the party immediately (i'm doing visuals? it worked) to catch CHEESEBURGER play a manly rock n roll set in this very nicely abandoned 2 level warehouse space with broken escalators. But we got there late and the line ups for booze were silly and we were burning out after 4 days. So we walked down 6th Street, said goodbye to superfriends FLOSSTRADAMUS and watched the cops un-close all the streets and let the janitors clean up the billion flyers laying in the gutters on 6th Street so Austin could turn back into a nice normal city for the church goin folks Sunday.

Horses shut it down.

And thats it, SXSW 2010!

SXSW - DAY 3

Music

words by Jason Sulyma

Who Made Who

At every SXSW you have those slow mornings where you just need a lil "ME" time at the hotel cuz yer party batteries are drained. so we all stayed at our hotel into late into the afternoon with $100 worth of room service consisting of plates and plates of ice cream and grilled cheese sandwhiches and other things totally covered with cheese. after draggin ourselves post food coma into downtown Austin for day of SXSW we started our day at the MAD DECENT x IHEARTCOMIX "CARNIVILLE" which is located at the Mexican Cultural Center. Mad Decent and Iheartcomix really outdid themselves with this event - making the Fader Fort and other private parties lazy - with not just an amazing line up of performers - from MajorLazer - Rye Rye - Maluca - The Walkment - GZA - Kid Sister - The Very Best and soooo many more - to the real "CARNY" feel of the event with a Gravatron ride and other tacky amusement rides to the Texas Size Corn Dogs and Funnel Cake gettin' served up. GLASS CANDY was on stage at the Mad Decent x Iheartcomix fiesta when we arrived and they were delivering up their usual disco amazingness  - with their new songs really impressing the 1000+ kids in attendance.

SXSW - DAY 2

SXSW 2010
DAY 2

Edo of Brasstronaut

after a messy first nite in Austin, Texas for some (ok.me <http://ok.me> ) we rolled out of bed and back into bars with a noontime BRASSTRONAUT show at Republic - which hosted the Sled Island Festival Showcase. BRASSTRONAUT, as usual, was wonderful with their E.D.I.clarinet-horn-piano-guitar epic pop jams - even when using all borrowed gear such as Travis Barker from Blink 182's drum kit which Travis Barker left there the nite before from his A-TRAK x TRAVIS BARKER drumsNdeejay show which was probably just as horrible as it was when I saw DJ AM x TRAVIS BARKER play at Coachella in 2009.
