Doug Brown: Best in Show

Art

Doug Brown's work will be on display as part of the Best in Show Exhibition at The Gladstone Hotel in Toronto until March 31.

If you're not yet familiar with Doug Brown's work, maybe you are with his stencils that were at one point showing up all over snowbanks around Toronto during the last decade. It wasn't until just recently that Color Contributor Ben Pobjoy discovered Brown was the artist behind these perplexing pieces. Today, Brown continues to mix media and bold visuals in his art, some of which appears alongside Pobjoy's interview with Brown in our new issue 10.1.

Make sure to get down to the Gladstone before the end of the month to see even more examples in person. More details on Facebook.

Vote for Mike Christie's "The Beggar's Garden"

Michael Christie is in the running for a CBC Bookie Award and needs your help with voting. Last year, the longtime Color contributor and once Senior Editor published his collection The Beggar's Garden (Harper Collins) which not only garnered some much-deserved national praise, but landed Mike on the Scotiabank Giller Longlist. This, of course, is no small feat as the Giller list is about as prestigious as it comes for Canadian writers.

Despite coming up a bit short on taking home the prize, Mike is back for another kick at the awards can with a nomination for the 2nd Annual CBC Bookie Awards. If you haven't yet read The Beggar's Garden, I sincerely urge you to pick up a copy—the haunting and candid picture of Vancouver's DTES and the people who inhabit it is will certainly strike a chord for any reader.

And even of you haven't read it yet, you should still go here to vote for Mike, because someday you will read it and love it and be kicking yourself that you didn't cast that vote when you had the chance!

The Antique Store opens in Ottawa

Skate

Ottawa, ON officially has a new shop in The Antique Store (9 Florence St.) With all the gnarly shit that's been coming out of Ottawa recently, it should come as no surprise that this new shop has all the ingredients for a badass hangout and will surely be a must-visit for skaters making the pilgrimage to our nation's capital.

Shit really got rolling out there, it seems, right after Terry Worona captured Sam Lind's insane drop-in, which went on to make the cover of Color 9.4. Following closely on the heels of this photo, another ripping lensman, Josh Hotz, sent us this great little series called "Typology" and then Aaron Cayer and Guillame Lebel unleashed While You Were on Facebook on the world. We loved watching these East Coasters ripping the streets so much we couldn't resist premiering WYWOF to the Vancouver masses at Lazy Tuesday. Color contributor Sean Lennon even put together a tasty little review in the new issue (10.1).

Check out this video from their grand opening party. These dudes know how to party and we're stoked to have our mags in their shop.
