"To become a good skateboarder you just have to lose your fear, and they don't have any fear in the first place". These are the kids of Skateistan, the world's first co-educational skateboarding school in Afghanistan (http://skateistan.org). The non-profit organization aims to give internally displaced youth valuable skills and opportunities in cross-cultural interaction, education, and personal empowerment. Skateistan brings together kids of different ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds and genders to give them the tools they need to promote social change and development in their country. And, these kids just love to skate. Here are some of them on Go Skateboarding Day in Kabul this year:
There are lots of ways to support this unique and important cause, but the most fun way is coming up next week. The Marc Curtis Smith Skateboard Slide Guitar Art Open (click here for details) aims to raise as much money as possible for Skateistan: two great bands (Phoenix Thunderbird and Dead Voices), drink specials and more, all to benefit the charity.
