We started at Threadgill's for Roky Erickson's 8th Annual Ice Cream Social. We arrived just as the lead singer of The Riverboat Gamblers took a much applauded climb to the roof to finish up their set.
J Mascis was up next with his new "supergroup" Sweet Apple. Unfortunately, Mascis took the role of second fiddle, handing the spotlight over to singer John Petkovic of Cobra Verde who wiggled about the stage doing his best Joey Ramone meets Mick Jagger impression.
then Roky Erickson! It's a little sad seeing such a legend in a less than legendary state, but he held it together pretty well.
we spotted a pretty slick ride parked outside of ihop.
Justin Regan shows you how to better accessorize your motorcycle.
thankfully, we found another sissy place to stop for food in tucson.
then we were on our way to las cruces. patrick hooked up a free house to stay the night...
we made it. this town stinks.
a classy painting in our new house.
we hardly talk to each other. just acknowledging glances then back to our iphones.
randy is the first and only one of us to pull out the board so far.
we woke up to really grim looking skies and rain in las cruces. we decided to puss out and stay another day.
we snuck into some really shitty movies all day as we waited for the storm to pass over. hoping for some warmth finally; it's been uncharacteristically cold in arizona.
every day starts at starbucks. everyone's noses in their phones.
Patrick O'Dell, Randy from No Age and I are riding from Los Angeles to Austin, Texas for SXSW. We left today for the 5 day trek and it's Randy's first time out of LA on a motorcycle. Wish him luck and follow our ride here and on twitter: @COLORMAG
normally on these bike trips, you end up eating whatever the group eats; usually bar and/or gas station cuisine. this time, i find myself quite happy to be rolling with two vegans, eating well and strategically. tonight we dine at GREEN in Tempe, AZ.
Patrick O'Dell and Ty Evans have been busy shooting a documentary for HBO on legendary east coast skater Wilfredo Gomez. Featuring stories from Guy Mariano, Mark Gonzales, Andrew Reynolds, Heath Kirchart, Gino Iannucci, Eric Koston and more.
In an effort to solidify their brand as something "pioneering" and "culture-shaping", Absolut Vodka recently gave Spike Jonze a bunch of money and complete creative control so that they would be able to stamp his works with their logo.
"It was a pretty incredible opportunity, they (ABSOLUT) didn't give me any requirements to make a movie that had anything to do with vodka. They just wanted me to make something that was important to me, and let my imagination take me wherever I wanted. And it wasn't like working with some huge corporation where I had to meet with committees of people. It was just a small group, and it seemed like creativity and making something that affected them emotionally was the only thing that really mattered to them. I got to make my first love story. It's about the relationship between two robots living in Los Angeles".
The short film is titled "I'm Here"; a 30-minute love story about the relationship between two robots living in L.A. The film premiered at this year's Sundance festival in January and is set for a series of premieres throughout March in the UK. i guess this interview is old news, but i had never read it. among other things, strickland provides some interesting insight into the glory days of the piss drunx crew, the start of baker and the subsequent rise and fall of bootleg. be warned, there's a fair share of shit talking so don't forget that there's two sides to every story...
long a stranger to the blogosphere, Scott Pommier has finally joined the masses and added a blog to his website and one to promote a new chopper book project. you can always follow him on twitter too.
