SXSW

DAY ONE

We started at Threadgill's for Roky Erickson's 8th Annual Ice Cream Social. We arrived just as the lead singer of The Riverboat Gamblers took a much applauded climb to the roof to finish up their set.

J Mascis was up next with his new "supergroup" Sweet Apple. Unfortunately, Mascis took the role of second fiddle, handing the spotlight over to singer John Petkovic of Cobra Verde who wiggled about the stage doing his best Joey Ramone meets Mick Jagger impression.

then Roky Erickson! It's a little sad seeing such a legend in a less than legendary state, but he held it together pretty well.

we spotted a pretty slick ride parked outside of ihop.

Justin Regan shows you how to better accessorize your motorcycle.

Tucson to El Paso

Life / Music

we left for tucson looking for breakfast.

thankfully, we found another sissy place to stop for food in tucson.

then we were on our way to las cruces. patrick hooked up a free house to stay the night...

we made it. this town stinks.

a classy painting in our new house.

we hardly talk to each other. just acknowledging glances then back to our iphones.

randy is the first and only one of us to pull out the board so far.

we woke up to really grim looking skies and rain in las cruces. we decided to puss out and stay another day.

we snuck into some really shitty movies all day as we waited for the storm to pass over. hoping for some warmth finally; it's been uncharacteristically cold in arizona.

every day starts at starbucks. everyone's noses in their phones.

seriously.

Motorcycles to SXSW

Life / Music

Patrick O'Dell, Randy from No Age and I are riding from Los Angeles to Austin, Texas for SXSW. We left today for the 5 day trek and it's Randy's first time out of LA on a motorcycle. Wish him luck and follow our ride here and on twitter: @COLORMAG

normally on these bike trips, you end up eating whatever the group eats; usually bar and/or gas station cuisine.  this time, i find myself quite happy to be rolling with two vegans, eating well and strategically.  tonight we dine at GREEN in Tempe, AZ.
