SPRING MIXTAPE: BEACH ON THE MOON

Music

From our venerable music editor, Saelan. "Named for a Kurt Vile song, cuz the man is ruling and he appears twice. Slightly lunar vibes for upcoming warm nights. I bought shorts. Let's drink on a porch."

FINAL DAY AT COACHELLA

Music
Sunday was the third and final day of burning sun and killer shows at Coachella 2009. On the trek in we saw this guy, who almost made it into the parking lot before his car had to be doused by the fire truck.
First show of the day was the Friendly Fires. They made everyone (including me) dance and i forgot to take a photo.
Over in the next tent Fucked Up was playing.
Taking a brief pause to chat in between climbing everything in sight and heading into the audience, Damian assured everyone in the pit that none of them should worry because he gets tested regularily, which i thought was very nice and quite Canadian of him.
Lykke Li put on one of the best performances of the weekend. I'll post her cover of Lil Wayne's A Milli as soon as i get it uploaded.
I planned on going to see The Clipse next, but they were a no-show. Unfortunately, the crowd's chants of bullshit probably didn't even matter to the boys from Virginia.
Instead, i got a chance to see Antony and the Johnsons.
He's got a pretty unique voice and i liked hearing something different.
Caught a couple songs at Peter, Bjorn and John before heading to grab a nice snack.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were on the mainstage at sundown. So good good good.
I got to see Devendra Banhart live for the first time and now i like him even more.
I felt kind of creepy snapping this shot of Kirsten Dunst, but then i heard all the shutters going and saw the even creepier paparazzii hiding behind trees to get their photos. At least i wasn't being sneaky about it.
My Bloody Valentine produced a constant wall of sound, but in a good way.
The highlight of my night. Public Enemy played every song from It Takes a Nation of Millions to a crowd consisting of fans who could, and did, sing along to all the songs, and fans who weren't even born when the album came out.
The man is 50. Its no wonder his crew looked nervous when he jumped off of speakers and took a couple of dives into the crowd.
This was my favourite day of the festival by far and a great end to another trip to Coachella.

SAT AT COACHELLA

Music

it was 97 degrees yesterday here in the indio desert. if i was a weather lady the only way i could describe the heat would be to say that it is fucking hot. the heat makes my mind mushy so i can't think of a better description. here was saturday at coachella.

This is how you get to the venue, herded along in a fenced in corridor. moooooo.

BLITZEN TRAPPER from Portland. I'd never seen them before, but their set was so good it made me forget about the most painfully long and annoying sound cheque ever. WARNING...kind of alt-country-ish. see below for some video.

MICHAEL FRANTI on the main stage. He is someone who i would never sit and listen too, but his show is so insanely high energy that everyone couldn't help but getting into it. maybe being in the partial shade in the beer garden helped a little too.

FLEET FOXES. Kind of disappointed at this show, but not because of the band's performance. Theivery Corporation was playing at the main stage and i could hear them better than the lovely harmonies supposedly coming from the band i actually wanted to listen too. poor planning by the festival.

We had a wander through a bunch of tents and caught pieces of a couple shows. This was the Jr.Boys.

Had a little dance party with Crookers and a couple thousand of our closest friends...

Then switched it up a little and cooled down with BAND OF HORSES on the outdoor stage.

Then it was time for MIA who filled in for an absent Amy Winehouse on the main stage. The show started off promisingly, but...

unfortunately her set sounded like someone had pulled up beside us in a car and was blasting her out their windows. then she decided to call audience members up on stage, 'cause it worked so well last year. Because of all her blabbing she ended up only playing 5 or 6 songs and she sounded like crap. booooooo.

eventually the day ended as it began. one more day to go.
