Dark Days documentary

Life / Film / Art

I remember hearing about this documentary years ago, and then came across it awhile ago, but haven't had a chance to watch more then a few minutes of it til last night. Every shot is like a photo you can't take your eyes off, wish I'd taken the time to watch it earlier... If you have an hour and a half, spend it on this.

From Wikipedia:

Dark Days is a documentary made by Marc Singer, a British filmmaker. The film follows a group of people living in an abandoned section of the New York City underground railway system, more precisely the area of the so called Freedom Tunnel.

When he relocated from London to Manhattan, Marc Singer was struck by the number of homeless people he had seen throughout the city. Singer had befriended many in New York's homeless community and later, after hearing of people living underground in abandoned tunnel systems, he met and became close to a group of people living in The Freedom Tunnel community stretching north from Penn Station past Harlem. After living with them for a number of months, he decided to create a documentary in order to help them financially. Singer had never been a filmmaker before, and saw the production of Dark Days as a means of gaining better accommodation for the residents of the tunnel.

The film's crew consisted of the subjects themselves, who rigged up makeshift lighting and steadicam dollies, and learned to use a 16mm camera with black-and-white Kodak film. The post-production process took years, as financial difficulties created delays, as did Singer's insistence of creative control to protect the tunnel residents.

LRG #3

Fashion / Film / Skate

Lifted Research Group comes through with a third skate commercial. Could they be hinting at another video production? Or is Kyle Camarillo just a damn fine editor that likes to keep busy? Your guess is as good as mine.

BNEETH - THE EYE OF THE TIGER

(left) photographer-choice frame / photographer's rendering (right)

Back in November (2011) I shared some photos from my time spent in NY and Boston and ended my post with a session at Tompkins Square Park. There, I was visited by a hobby photographer there who kindly asked if I minded him snapping off some photos and I promised to share them on here no matter how embarrassing they were.

I was curious how they'd turn out because I could hear he was shooting off sequences. This is what I got back... I particularly like the 'banana hands' overly photoshoped one. It's the only one he sent me where I'm actually doing something, but all the 'eye of the tiger' ones are just as funny.

Recently Bneeth.com published another awkward story of mine from this trip. Check it out HERE.

Ryan Wallace and Chris Duncan - Cooper Cole Gallery Toronto

Art

Opening reception Friday February 3, 2012 / 6 - 10pm

For press and sales information please inquire with the gallery.

COOPER COLE is pleased to welcome American artists Ryan Wallace and Chris Duncan to a two person exhibition titled Transmission Lines. Wallace and Duncan's linear variations of shape explore the margins of time and space while echoing the unstable tension between vision, perception, and reflection. Both artists explore a variety of materials to great visual effect. Mixed mediums create shapes which are layered and duplicated in reference to perpetual movement, hypnosis, op art, and the mutable nature of color. These constructed shapes and surfaces open the dialogue between perception and perspective, making it difficult to interpret the true materials being used as well as the limits of the work itself.

Ryan Wallace is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and a recent recipient of a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant. Wallace’s paintings, works on paper, installations and sculptures can be found in galleries, institutions, and collections across North America and Europe. Recent exhibitions have been at Morgan Lehman Gallery, Rachel Uffner Gallery, Zieher Smith, The Islip Art Museum and Brooklyn Academy of Music. Wallace currently lives and works in Brooklyn, and Amagansett, New York.

Chris Duncan received his BFA at the California College of Arts and is a 2013 Master of Fine Arts candidate at Stanford University. In 2006 he won a Goldie Award for Visual Art. His paintings and installation have been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums in North America such as the Berkeley Art Museum, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and the Kemper Art Museum. He has also exhibited internationally in Canada, Belgium, and Japan. Duncan currently lives and works in Oakland, California.
